IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Jane
(Crain) Downs
August 10, 1924 – January 27, 2023
Betty Jane Crain Downs was born on August 10, 1924 to Gertie Chloe (Hopkins) and Abraham Nelson Crain in Sperry, Oklahoma, blessing number 8 in line of eleven children. She passed from this earth on January 27, 2023, after living a long, wonderful life. While being employed as an airplane wing welder in 1943, Betty met a young, handsome Laurence Downs in the local roller rink and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage, settling in the Bowden area north of Sapulpa along old Route 66. Betty had many creative talents she shared with others including decorating elaborate birthday cakes and sewing an array of costumes for a host of ballet and tap dancers. Many in the family and neighborhood own one of her crocheted afghans, and countless elementary school children benefited from a stocking cap knitted with love. She had a passion for helping children learn and spent many years as a kindergarten teacher's assistant at Allen Bowden School. She developed life-long relationships while there, especially her best friend, Doris Winsel, who she could be found playing a weekly canasta game with well into their 9 th decade of life. One of Betty's greatest pleasures was the annual Crain Family Reunion that brought nearly 75 people together each year. It was always a day filled with wild stories, crazy games, picnic food, endless laughs, and great family memories.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Gene, Joe, Paul, Mac, Dean, Buddy, and Kenny; sisters, Juanita, Gertie, and Peggy; her son Larry and his wife Linda; and her son-in-law Jerry Sivadon.
She is survived by her daughters Donna and Shelley (Paul), 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 9 great, great-grandchildren, and a plethora of nieces and nephews.
Her children and grandchildren laid Betty to rest beside Laurence on January 30 th .
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Clarehouse Social Model Hospice Home https://www.clarehouse.org/donate/ . The family would also like to thank the nurses and staff of Saint Francis Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care they provided for Betty.
