IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris A.
Robertson
February 12, 1936 – January 8, 2024
Doris Ann was the last of eight children to be born into the Thompson family on February 12, 1936, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She is preceded in death by her husband Bob Ruhl, and grandson Stephen Michael Ruhl, her mother and father, Ben and Hattie Thompson and all of her brothers and sisters in the Thompson family! She and Bob Ruhl met at the local skating rink in town and married in Dec 1953. That was the beginning of 58 years together that took her on all kinds of adventures. Bob and Doris did two tours of duty overseas in Turkey, lived in Tampa, Florida, Omaha Nebraska, Del Rio, San Antonio, and Wichita Falls Texas to name a few.
The first time Doris ever got on an airplane was when she was taking her two young children and their dog, Candy over to Istanbul Turkey. She quickly found her niche in the small air force base in Turkey and began a local flower shop to help young military brides who needed flowers for their weddings! Bob and Doris could always been seen on the weekends mixing and mingling with the local Turkish people drinking Turkish chai and dancing in the streets!
When retired from 20 yrs of service in the military, they returned to Sapulpa where they were took over Ruhl's Flower Shop from Bob's parents (Rosebud and Ollie Jean Ruhl). They worked all aspects of the floral business from funerals to weddings including catering. Doris's least favorite holiday was Mother's Day as there was "no sleep" for this Mom!!
During the years after retirement from the flower shop they continued to enjoy their love of traveling by going to Cincinnati, New York and faraway places like Paris and Rome and even worked the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia! Doris was also a school bus assistant on the special needs school bus for many years.
Doris was a loving mother to her two children, Nancy and Steven and to her grandson Casey and great grandchildren Elizabeth, Aiden and Nicholas as well as her daughter-in-law Tracy Ruhl. But her love knew no bounds and didn't stop there – she was known as Grandma Doris to her bonus family which included Janet Howard, Angela Ragan; Glenn and Kathleen Schuster with Heidi and Slade; Brandon and Allie Goodwin; and Natasha and Adam Perryman with Avi Joy and Nehemiah. She delighted in her family and playing with her grandchildren and watching them grow. One of her favorite things to do was to make Christmas cookies and decorate them with her family – a tradition that is still being carried on in our family today. She was always there to greet each of us with a smile and the best hug that would solve the world's problems!
Doris loved her church and was President of the Builders class for many years. She also enjoyed singing in the choir and preforming in several cantatas at First Christian Church. While in her role as President of the Builders Class she met and married her second husband, Bill Robertson…after all it was part of her responsibilities to make sure everyone felt welcome! She and Bill enjoyed several years of travel together before his passing in 2020.
Many things have been said about Doris…. she was a light in every room; her heart overflowed with kindness; and most of all…. she was the cute little marshmallow loving …pink wearing firecracker that loved to travel…. that sums it up right there…That was Doris…that was our Mother!
Mother, you left us beautiful, loving and precious memories. Your love will still be our guide... although we cannot see you, you will always be at our side.
