In this life, we all have a journey. Our journeys are all different, our paths all take different directions. This is the story of the journey of Doyle Haskell Jackson - son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
Doyle was born in Woodville, Oklahoma on August 16, 1933. He left this life to begin his journey in heaven on July 9, 2020. In the time between those dates, Doyle touched many people's lives, and they were all the better for having known him.
Doyle was the oldest of seven children born to Clarence Sumner Jackson and Jewel Mae Cobb Jackson. Although he was born in Woodville, the family moved when Lake Texoma took over the town. They briefly lived in Golden and Glover, then moved to Kingston in 1947. He graduated from Kingston High School in 1952 and joined the Army in 1953 where he earned the Good Conduct Decoration Medal.
Doyle was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. He told many stories about his voyage across the ocean, which was a bit rough, and his time in Germany. He was able to do a little traveling while there when he and fellow soldiers were on leave. The love of travel stayed with him always.
When Doyle left the military, he came back to Oklahoma and began working for Amos Construction Company. He and friends would go to the Ferndale Cafe in Sapulpa for lunch. There he met a beautiful waitress named Joe Ann. It was a simple act of going out for lunch, but it was the beginning of an amazing love story that lasted over 63 years. Doyle and Joe Ann were married on June 6, 1957. They were blessed with three daughters: Teresa, Angie and Debbi. During those 63 years, Doyle and Joe Ann were the most excellent example of true love, loyalty and devotion.
For a time, Doyle worked at Sheffield Steel. He also managed a service station in Sapulpa for Orie Young. Eventually, Doyle bought a backhoe and started his own business doing backhoe work. He worked for Bradley Service Station Equipment and later bought the business. There really wasn't much Doyle couldn't do. He could fix anything. He could build anything. He had a work ethic that is seldom seen.
Doyle served on the Creek County District 3 Water board from 2005 to 2015. He was an usher at Sapulpa First Church of God for many years and always brought donuts on Sunday mornings and helped cook the men's breakfasts. The annual Roaring River trips were something that he always looked forward to. Community and caring for others was always very important to him.
Doyle also had many hobbies. He loved to fish, hunt and hike. After he retired, he was able to travel even more. In 1999, he and his family drove in his motorhome to Alaska. It was a trip that he had longed to make and he loved every minute of it.
Doyle had four brothers: James, Jerry, Ralph and Taft, and two sisters: Billie and Fran. Through the years they were a tight knit family and spent much time together camping and fishing.
Doyle is survived by his wife Joe Ann of Sapulpa, three daughters, Teresa Clark of Sapulpa, Angie Espich and son-in-law Lehman of Sapulpa, Debbi Nichols and son-in-law Nick of Tulsa. Five grandchildren: Nathan Bettis and Andrea of Owasso, Amy Bettis and Dave of Sapulpa, James Dickens and Tracy of Sapulpa, Taylor Nichols and Dakota of Oklahoma City, and Spencer Nichols of Stillwater, one great granddaughter, Addison Bettis of Owasso. Doyle is also survived by his sister Fran Reed of Oklahoma City and brother Taft Jackson of Lexington, Oklahoma.
Doyle was preceded in death by his parents Clarence Sumner and Jewel Mae Jackson, brothers James, Jerry and Ralph Jackson, and sister Billie Packer. Also his son-in-law Jim Dickens.
Doyle was the kind of man who lived his life by example. He helped others whenever he could. He was kind to everyone. He worked hard and he loved completely. He raised a family who could always count on him for anything. Although they are heartbroken to finish living this life without him, they know that his journey - his amazing, wonderful journey- has ended on this earth, but has begun new in heaven. And I'm sure the fishing is always good up there.
Services honoring Doyle's life will be 2:oopm, Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at the Sapulpa First Church of God, 1011 E. Hastain Ave., Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Green Hill Memorial Gardens in Sapulpa. Arrangements are under the direction of Traditions Funeral and Cremation Services, 35 S. Main, Kellyville, Oklahoma, 918-247-7373.
