Larry Dayton Bailey, 89, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma stepped into heaven at 10:07 PM Monday, September 7, 2026, with family by his side.
Larry was born on July 17, 1937, in Kiefer, Oklahoma to Joseph “Dayton” Bailey and Virginia Bertha Bailey. He was born in his grandmother Moore’s home with the help of a midwife Lavonn. Larry grew up moving around between Oklahoma and Oregon. His parents moved them to Oregon to work in the shipyard as welders. Dayton also worked as a barber and Larry held a nighttime job setting bowling pins. Larry lived in Portland, Burns, Bend, and Canyonville Oregon. That’s where he developed his love for the mountains. Larry moved to Sapulpa, Oklahoma during his freshman year of high school. He finished out his high school education at Kiefer High School. He played basketball and football while there. He graduated as the class of 1955’s salutatorian.
Larry met Peggy Jean Adams when she was in the 8th grade and he was a freshman. Later in high school they began dating. Larry earned her dad’s approval and respect when he pulled up with a 6 pack of Pepsi! Larry and Peggy were married on June 30, 1956, at the First Church of God in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. They faithfully attended, served, and supported that church until their health no longer allowed it. Larry always put God first, then family, then work. Larry loved becoming a part of the Adams family. He gained the siblings he never had with Clyde, Bill, Fred, and Carla.
Larry attended Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma from 1955-1956. After he and Peggy were married in the summer of 1956 he began working at Sinclair as a mail boy and then later as a junior clerk in the propane department. He began attending night classes at the University of Tulsa while he worked days. Soon after, Peggy began working full time so that Larry could go to college at TU full time. He attended TU from 1957-1962 and they had 2 children; Randy and Lisa, along the way. Larry graduated from TU with his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree. He later passed his 3-day Certified Public Accountant exam on his first try, which is very unheard of!
Larry worked in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Sinclair Oil and Gas for 9 years and Mid America Pipeline Company for 9 years. He continued his professional career at Williams Pipeline as a Controller and then finished his work career at Williams Energy Ventures Company as Vice President of Finance and Administration until he retired in 1995.
Larry’s hobbies included hunting, bowling, softball, basketball, snow skiing, swimming, and especially golf. He even ran in the Tulsa Run a few times. He enjoyed staying fit. He and Peggy had many great times cheering on Randy and Lisa on the basketball court and other various activities. Larry recently got to watch one of his great grandsons, Kye, play his first baseball and basketball games. He also attended Kye’s baptism in August. Larry enjoyed hunting with his dad, brothers-in-law, his son, and grandson. He loved being outdoors. Larry and Peggy cherished the time they spent with their lifelong friends; Jim and Deloris Hale, Jack and Nancy Young, and Fred and Midge Parks. They also had great friends they met golfing at the Oaks Country Club; Ken and Jane Wagner and Floyd and Karen Morris. Larry spent many hours on the Oaks golf course with Peggy, friends, and the Sunshine Boys. He had 7 holes-in-one. According to Terry, his last hole in one was on hole 6.
Larry was very proud of his family and treasured every moment with them. They traveled together to Branson, Shangri-La, Texas, Florida, Utah, Georgia, Colorado, and Oregon. They went to games, hunting, skiing, and sightseeing. He was a wonderful dad, grandpa, and PopPop. Larry was kind, honest, respectful, smart, hardworking, and very brave. He endured several medical setbacks, but he never let it get him down. His faith in God was unwavering, and he was loved by everyone who knew him. He had beautiful blue eyes and a heart of gold.
Larry was cared for in his last 2 ¾ years at Beehive Homes of Glenpool, Oklahoma. While there, he was able to go on many fun outings. He went to the fair, fishing, Christmas Chute, petting zoo, and scenic drives. He also got to enjoy many other fun activities like luaus, parties, and dinners in the home. The family would like to offer their deep appreciation to Lisa and Justin Meacham, Amber Stickles, Hayley, Lanita, Nicole, Jessica, and all the others for their wonderful care.
