Mary Toche Gibbs, lovingly known as "Gertie" to her family and "Gaga" to the younger generations, peacefully passed away on May 4, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on August 28, 1946, to George Hunter and Mollie Grayson Gibbs in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Mary lived a life filled with compassion, service, and devotion to her family and community.
Mary's journey took her to California in the early 1970s, where she worked as a nurse aide in the Neonatal Department of the county hospital, surrounded by family and friends. Her caring nature and dedication to helping others shone through in her work with newborns and their families.
Returning to Oklahoma in the late 1970s to care for her elderly mother, Mary embarked on a new career path in cosmetology, studying at Sapulpa Beauty College. Throughout her life, she worked as a skilled cook at various establishments, including country clubs, restaurants, and nutrition sites, until her retirement.
Mary's commitment to her community was evident in her involvement with Meals on Wheels and numerous church-related activities. Her passion for spiritual growth led her to hold revivals both at home and in various church locations, touching the lives of many with her faith and kindness.
Predeceased by her parents, George and Mollie, and her siblings John (Sunnyboy), Robert (Chubby), Frank, Sandy, Leon, George (Hogeye), Bert (Jack), Richard, Mona, and Charley (Ike), Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish her memory.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Monday, May 12, at 1 pm at Traditions Funeral Home. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather for a luncheon at the Creek Community Center in Sapulpa to share memories and honor Mary's vibrant spirit.
