Ron Powers, 79 of Sapulpa went to be with the Lord on January 19, 2020 at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, with family by his bedside.
Ron was born March 1, 1940 in Sapulpa, Ok. His parents were Robert and Helen Knight Powers. Ron played football at Sapulpa High School and was a part of the 1957-58 team that won the State Championship. After graduating in 1958, he attended Memphis State University before joining the United States Marine Corps in December of that year.
Ron was stationed in Japan and Hawaii before being transferred to Kansas City. While in Kansas City, he met Sandra Ruth Crockett (Sandy) at a mutual friend's wedding and said it was "love at first sight". Ron and Sandy were married February 22, 1964.
After a 20-year career with the Marines and having served 2 tours in Vietnam, Ron retired in 1978 as a Gunnery Sergeant. Following retirement, he entered Ozark Bible College and was ordained as a Christian Minister. He served several congregations as pastor or interim pastor. Ron also taught NJROTC in Carl Junction, MO.
Returning to Sapulpa, OK., Ron worked with the Sapulpa Police department as a dispatcher, eventually transitioning to the Creek County Sheriff's Department where he served as a deputy and undersheriff until his (second) retirement.
And one more time Ron returned to school, teaching at Sapulpa Middle School.
Ron was a devoted husband to his wife of almost 57 years, Sandy, and a wonderful father to Tracy Lynn Anderson and Trisha Leigh Monroe (Todd). He was the best Poppy to grandchildren Erin Elizabeth Matheson (Chris) and great-granddaughter Adeline Matheson, Molly Katherine Dooley (Matt), Melissa Renee Huemmer (Mason), Andrew James Ball, Zachary Powers Wilson (Fiancé Alexis Cirz), Mitchell Joseph Wilson, Matthew Christopher Wilson. Ron was Dad to international children Vicki Treibmann and children Kaya, Mia, and Till, Yumiko Boyle (Frank) and children James and Marie, Annika Vuori, Daniel Garro (Adrianna) and children Daniella and Gabriella, Pablo Alvarado (Alexandra) and children Diego & Annabelle. He is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be a visitation Wednesday, January 22, 2020 from 6-8pm at Traditions Funeral Chapel, 35 S Main, Kellyville Ok. 918.247.7373.
Services will be held Thursday, January 23, 2020 at 10:30am at the First Baptist Church of Sapulpa.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund or to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
