Obituary

Samuel "Sam" Edward Bachar, age 72, loving husband to Peggy, and proud father of Shannon, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Apr 18, 2025, passing peacefully in his sleep. Sam was born on December 21, 1952, to Art and Myrtle Bachar of Kansas City, Missouri. Upon high school graduation, Sam felt the call to duty, quickly enlisting in the United States Coast Guard. He proudly served for 20 years as a Machinery Senior Chief and spent 2 tours of duty in the Vietnam War. During his service, Sam received numerous awards, medals, and Commendations including the National Defense Medal, Permanent Cutterman Insignia, and numerous Good Conduct Awards. The honors most dear to Sam, however, were the Vietnam Service Ribbon, SEA Service Ribbon, 4 Commandant Commendations, Jumping E.M.T. and Rescue Swimmer Pins, and Chiefs Anchors. While aboard, "The Rush" and "The Dauntless," Sam triaged the wounded and rescued those in distress while lost at sea. Upon retiring from the Coast Guard, Sam explored various job opportunities which included heating and air conditioning service and repair, engine mechanic, and maintenance supervisor. His final career and the one from which he retired in 2015, was production line manufacturing at Kimberly-Clark, Jenks, OK facility.

Sam Bachar married the love of his life, Peggy Bachar, on September 21, 1985. They faithfully loved and cared for each other for over 37 years, in sickness and in health. Sam lost his devoted wife in 2023, and the void in his heart never quite healed. We take great joy in knowing that they are now reunited in Heaven.  Sam had numerous hobbies which he enjoyed during his retirement years which included woodworking, metal printing, leather work, computer gaming, and just "tinkering" in his garage. He had a love for music which spanned the genres from Gospel to Blue Grass. Blessed with a marvelous singing voice, Sam sang in the church choir and family events. He had recently purchased a guitar with future plans for taking lessons. Sam was never far from a radio, enjoying the music he loved. He was a proud member of 2 civic organizations, the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rites. Never one to sit idle, Sam enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors, and other veterans, including his buddies from Cape Sarichef! In addition to his human friends, Sam loved and cared for many Shih Tzu canine companions throughout the years that most assuredly greeted him at the "Rainbow Bridge." He especially loved his most recent boys, Beau and Duke!

Samuel was not only a devoted husband, but a loving father to his daughter, Shannon Smith, whom he adored. He enjoyed spending time with Shannon on excursions which included going out to eat and grocery shopping. He got great satisfaction in being able to teach her how to fix just about anything, which is something Shannon will dearly miss. Sam continued to have a heart of service to others throughout his life.  He was a volunteer, helper, and contributor to his daughter's elementary classroom for the past 28 years. He loved visiting, donating, and making things for her students. He often portrayed Santa Claus at school, visiting the children and distributing treats! As a proud Coast Guard veteran, he thoroughly enjoyed attending the annual Veteran's Day Program at Shannon's elementary school, Holmes Park. He was honored in 2012 for his military service and was inducted into their Hall of Heroes.

Samuel Bachar will be missed by all who knew and loved him! He had a strong Christian faith, loving, serving, and praising the Lord daily. He knew with unwavering faith that he would go to Heaven and see his Peggy again. The U.S.  Coast Guard has a motto, "Semper Paratus-Always Ready." Sam was ready for his next mission, and his daughter takes comfort in knowing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he is now healed, made whole, and in Heaven reunited with his wife.

Samuel is survived by his daughter, Shannon Smith, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, brother, Doug Bachar, and sister, Helen Bachar, both of Kansas City, Missouri. He is preceded in death by his parents, Art and Myrtle Bachar, his wife, Peggy Bachar, two brothers, Arthur and Bobby, sister, Diana Bachar, and baby daughter, Alicia Dawn.
