IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wenonah Eldora
Belk
June 28, 1935 – November 27, 2021
Wenonah Eldora Ramsey Belk was born on June 28, 1935, in an adobe house in Lincoln, New Mexico and passed November 27, 2021 at the age of 86 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Throughout her life she resided in California, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. She most recently was a resident of Arbor Village in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
Wenonah is survived by her daughters and their spouses Gail Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, Jo and Randy Wood of Slick, OK, and Jeannie and Scott Agan of Katy, TX. She is also survived by her brother Charles Ramsey; half-sister Rebecca Heberer, and half-brother Richard Heberer II; six grandchildren Nathan Johnson, Amanda Baskin, Monique Wimberly, Kassie Gass, Kaitlyn Agan, and Kristin Agan; thirteen great-grandchildren Austin Johnson, Lydia Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Sophia Johnson, and Naomi Johnson; Joshua Robinson, David Robinson, Laurie Robinson, Julianne Breese, Isabella Breese; Sydney Gass, McKinley Gass, and Teagan Gass.
She is preceded in death by her mother Velma Rose Schweitzer; father legendary bowhunter James Christian Ramsey and sister Rachel Ramsey Piper.
As a young woman, Wenonah wrote a story in the Seventh-Day Adventist Review & Herald, in which she stated her dream of becoming a dean of girls or teacher one day. She never let go of that dream. She graduated high school at Lodi Academy in California in 1953. Although she attended college several times over the course of her life, it wasn't until the early age of fifty-seven that she finally graduated from Southwestern Adventist College in Keene, TX with a B.S. in Education.
Wenonah served as Dean of Girls at Enterprise Adventist Academy in the late 1950s. Wenonah taught at the Bristow Seventh-Day Adventist School from 1977 through 1982. She then went on to a serve over 30 years at Oklahoma Academy in Harrah, Oklahoma. During her tenure there, she served in many different roles, including Dean of Girls and teacher of English as a Second Language. In addition, she helped in the cafeteria, the campus day care, and school office. She was affectionately known as "Granny B" to her students and faculty alike.
You didn't have to spend a lot of time with Wenonah to understand she was a natural born teacher. It was not unusual for her children to be approached by former students who told them she was the best teacher they ever had. She didn't put much faith in new technology; one of her favorite phrases was "go look it up". She was not talking about the internet. She had a love of great books, and always felt a good book was the ultimate gift to share. She loved music of many types; she encouraged her children to become lovers of music as well by providing a variety of instrument lessons, including flute, clarinet, piano, organ, and guitar. She loved attending concerts and musicals through the performing arts center. She rarely watched television, but she could often be found in her recliner with the radio on and one or more books nearby. She loved all things historical, and she had many anecdotes to share about people and places if you had time to visit. Most importantly, she loved God and spent her life in His service supporting Christian education. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In accordance with her wishes, Wenonah will be laid to rest this spring at Turkey Creek Ranch in the presence of her family. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be directed to Oklahoma Academy in Harrah, Oklahoma.
Arrangements are under the direction of Traditions Funeral and Cremation Services, 35 S. Main, Kellyville, Oklahoma, 918-247-7373.
